At Snap, we believe that making a positive impact on society is our responsibility, and a key part of being kind. The Society section of our report describes our continued efforts in 2022 to prioritize responsible design principles, leverage our platform to empower meaningful action, and make a positive impact on the communities we serve through strategic partnerships, philanthropy, and volunteering.
Society
Privacy by Design
At Snap, we want our users to have control over the information they provide us, and feel empowered to express themselves. Our Privacy by Design program is guided by our 5 privacy principles, and brings together a cross-functional team to review new apps, features, services, and functionalities that handle personal data.
Snap releases Transparency Reports twice a year, and works with an independent assessor to conduct biennial Privacy Program audits.
Security by Design
As Snap continues to grow and create innovative products, we must also push the boundaries of security engineering and innovation. Our Information Security program works to safeguard the data and systems that enable us to remain a trusted part of Snapchatters’ daily lives.
Snap’s security experts are industry-recognized, and we offer security assurance and review services to our developers, engineers, and vendors. We also empower our workforce through hands-on security education and resources.
Inclusion by Design
Building equity of experience for all current and future Snapchatters is a primary goal at Snap. We bring cross-functional teams together to ensure that our diverse users feel like Snap products were developed with them in mind.
In 2022, we released our Inclusion By Design Principles that lay the foundation for our thinking around product inclusion: Increase Inclusion, Build with Empathy, and Take Smart Risks. These principles are a substantial part of the foundation for development at Snap.
Safety by Design
At the heart of our Safety by Design program, we aim to put Snapchatters’ well-being first as we innovate and develop new products. Our approach to safety is guided in transparency and control, and we have zero tolerance for illegal or harmful content or behavior on Snapchat.
In 2022, we developed a more robust Platform Governance Framework, expanded our Safety advisory board from 7 members to 17 members, and took action against over 12 million pieces of content globally that violated our policies.
We also expanded our global Law Enforcement Operations team, and hosted 3,000 officials for our second annual Law Enforcement Summit.
Community and Giving
The mission of Snap Philanthropy is to empower students from under-resourced communities by supporting equitable access to education and career opportunities in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics), while strengthening the cities where we live and work.
We believe the most meaningful way to make a difference is with a “volunteer-first” approach, where we support hyperlocal community organizations that offer our team members opportunities to roll up their sleeves and engage through hands-on service.
In 2022, our global Snap team devoted more than 8,270 hours to philanthropic projects — impacting hundreds of community organizations and schools in more than 50 cities across 26 countries — resulting in a 20% increase in year-over-year impact.
Snap Foundation
The mission of the Snap Foundation is to develop pathways to the creative economy for underrepresented youth in Los Angeles, enabling them to engage in artistic expression and experience economic inclusivity as working creatives. The foundation is a separate and independently managed 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization funded by donations from Snap Inc. and our co-founders, Evan Spiegel and Bobby Murphy.
In 2022, the Snap Foundation continued development of a participatory grantmaking program through the support of the Foundation’s Youth Advisory Council (YAC), a community of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) youth between the ages of 18-24.
Twenty-two Los Angeles-area nonprofits received YAC funding from the Foundation, while YAC members learned about grantmaking and investing in their communities.
